3rd Alarm School Fire - Wilmington

    Tuesday, April 17, 2012, 12:30 pm
  • Address:
    101 School Road:@Friends Upper School
  • Submitter:
    PhillyFireNews Staff
Details:

When Talleyville Fire Company's Quint 257 responded to the elite Friends' School, they expected to be faced with an alarm malfunction. Instead, they arrived to find an historical school structure -- the auditorium -- blasting out heavy smoke through cracks in the bricks. As New Castle County Fireboard completed filling out the Box Alarm, Engine 253's crew stretched an inch and 3/4 into the building, while the Quint team raised the 75ft aerial to the roof in anticipation of creating a few vent holes. Unfortunately, the roof was 1 inch thick slate so their power equipment would be useless. Dense smoke started pouring through every crack and crevice, and the truckies were ordered to immediately abandon their position. That order came none to soon because as soon as the 3 firefighters were safely on the aerial, the blaze exploded through the roof, inches from where they had been standing. With the fire showing itself 4 stories above, Chief Eric Haley of Claymont Fire Company assumed command, and requested a total of 6 aerials. Arriving engines were ordered to take available hydrants and lay supply lines to Side A. Their job would be to supply ladder trucks and towers as they began to arrive. Within 15 minutes, 5 elevated master streams were in service and remained so until visible flames had been knocked down. Engine and Truck crews were sent in to the auditorium to knockdown isolated fires and search for hidden flames. But the theater wasn't done with its own show and the the curtain raised on the roof blaze once again. On Side C, Goodwill Ladder-18 raised it aerial to the apex of the roof, and its crews began preparing a massive trench cut to stop the fire's progression to the rear of the structure. It worked...sorta. But as the flames revealed more and more of the roof, it became obvious that huge trussed beams were becoming detached from the brick walls. A collapse zone was established and Command ordered the evacuation of all interior personnel. All 6 aerials transitioned to elevated master streams, and that's how the final 30 minutes of the fire played out. During the operation, New Castle County paramedics set up a rehab sector on the school's massive lawn using Odessa Fire Company (Station 4 and 24) dedicated rehab unit. Two firefighters complaining of chest pains were examined on scene, then transported to local Wilmington hospitals for definitive health care. Both have been released and are in good condition. A veteran firefighter, now a fire policeman, came up to me and said, "I've been doing this for 45 years -- and I ain't ever seen Delaware County and Kent County working the same blaze." What he didn't know was that companies from New Jersey and Maryland were covering NC County's empty stations. Delaware State Fire Marshall's Office will be investigating the blaze for the next several days, but admit that I might have something to do with the re-wiring of the auditorium complex.
